This wonderfully woven rug has the most stunning rich blue background with soft secondary colours.
Bhadohi with its population of around 100’000 is situated in Uttar Pradesh, about 30 miles west of Varanasi (Benares) and about half way between New Delhi and Calcutta. It has for many years been the centre of Indian carpet manufacturing and is home to many small workshops some of which work to a very high standard
This piece is the product of one of these small workshops. The looms are very often set up in the houses of the weavers and quality control is ensured by regular visits during weaving by the master weavers. Again the pattern and design are based on Persian precedents with the border and the colouring betraying the Indian origin. The materials are of very good quality: the warps and wefts are of locally produced cotton while the wool is a mixture of native Indian wool and premium grade New Zealand wool. Chrome dyes, which have very good colour fastness, are used throughout
